Though He Slay Me

There is a moment in the Book of Job where, after what looks to Job and his friends to be much bad treatment at the hands of the Almighty, Job utters this immortal line: “Though he slay me, yet will I trust him.”

The idea that, at bottom, at the end of the day, we should simply trust in God’s good intentions towards us, no matter what things look like…this idea is one of the core pieces of the Christianity that Christ modeled.

There have been many times where I did not pass this test — though I swore that surely I would, back in those early days after meeting God and learning to become familiar with life in his care. Time and again in my life, pain has led to me thinking less of God and his intentions.

Yet still he sits down next to me, puts a hand on my shoulder, and speaks words of peace and calm, which often times I cannot hear. He does not leave me or forsake me, like the circumstances sometimes may seem to indicate. He does not condemn me, no matter how my mind rages in its belief that he does.

At the end of it all, God is good all the time. That is the actual truth, discussions and explanations aside.
